Spatial-temporal characteristics and influencing factors of Ecosystem Services Value: The case of Shennongjia as Natural World Heritage city

Abstract: Ecosystem services (ESs) acts a pivotal part in reconstructing the relationship between human beings and nature. An explicit understanding of ESs’ response to natural and socioeconomic conditions is needed for sustainable development. This study researched the ecosystem services value (ESV) and its influencing factors in the Natural World Heritage city (NWHC) in central China. Based on remote sensing (RS) data and socioeconomic data, ESV and landscape pattern indices were estimated to describe the eco-environment’s impact on ESV from 2005 to 2018. The relationship between ESV and socioeconomic environment was elucidated by establishing a coupling coordination degree model (CCDM) of ESV-economy-tourism system. The analysis implied that (1) The ESV increased from 3.36 billion yuan to 8.91 billion yuan and showed a strong spatial dependence; (2) The ESV was sensitive to changes in landscape fragmentation as the more the landscape became fragmented, the more the ESV increased; and (3) the coupling coordination degree of the ESV-economy-tourism system increased to a highly coupled coordination, showing a strong influence of tourism economic development on ESV. The development of economic and tourism will improve the eco-environment quality in NWHC. This paper provides references for research and policy-making in the protection and development of NWHC.
